What is Blue-Green Algae?

Blue-green algae (Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, often shortened to AFA) is a wild freshwater micro-algae and one of the oldest foods on earth. Ours grows wild in the pristine, mineral-rich waters of Upper Klamath Lake in Oregon, fed by volcanic soil and mountain snowmelt. It is deeply green, naturally rich in chlorophyll, and one of the most protein-dense foods in nature, carrying a broad spread of vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids and all the essential amino acids. Our BioActive Blue-Green Algae is wild-harvested, dried gently into a raw powder, and unique to the UK.

Where does our Blue-Green Algae come from, and how is it made?

Our algae is wild-harvested from Upper Klamath Lake in Oregon, one of the few places on earth where Aphanizomenon flos-aquae blooms in abundance. It is carefully handled so it reaches our producers alive and fresh. It is immediately dried using a proprietary, oxygen-free BioActive Dehydration process at no higher than 41°C (106°F). This gentle, low-temperature drying preserves the deep colour, the flavour and the broad spectrum of nutrients, keeping the algae raw. Imported directly from the producers to ensure full traceability and responsible sourcing.

How is Blue-Green Algae different from Spirulina and Chlorella?

Spirulina and Chlorella are two of the more familiar green superfoods many people already recognise, and although they're often grouped together, each has its own distinct character.

Spirulina is actually a blue-green algae too, a close cousin of ours, but it is grown in man-made tanks and ponds. Chlorella is a single-celled green algae, also farmed under controlled conditions. Ours is the wild one: Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, gathered from the open waters of Upper Klamath Lake, never cultivated.

That wildness is the heart of the difference. Where Spirulina and Chlorella are produced in aquaculture, our algae grows on its own in a living lake fed by volcanic minerals and mountain snowmelt.

A few other distinctions:

  • No cracking needed. Chlorella is wrapped in a tough cellulose wall the body cannot break down, so it has to be mechanically "cracked" before you can reach what is inside. Blue-green algae has only a soft membrane, so there is nothing to crack.
  • A naturally broad spectrum. Blue-green algae is one of the most protein-rich foods in nature and carries all the essential amino acids, a wide spread of minerals and vitamins, and deep chlorophyll.
  • Phenylethylamine. Blue-green algae naturally contains phenylethylamine, a compound Spirulina and Chlorella are not known for.

All three are nourishing greens. What sets ours apart is simple: it is the only one of the three that is truly wild, gathered from a living lake exactly as nature grows it, rather than farmed.

Is Blue-Green Algae safe?

Wild blue-green algae from Klamath Lake naturally needs to be tested for compounds called microcystins, which can be harmful above certain levels. This is the single most important thing to check when buying blue-green algae. Every batch of ours comes with a certificate of analysis, and our producer holds strict quality controls: only batches that test well within the safe limits set by the Oregon Health Authority are released for sale. We are always happy to share the certificate of analysis.

As with any concentrated superfood, we would not recommend it during pregnancy or while breastfeeding without first speaking to a qualified healthcare practitioner.

How do you take Blue-Green Algae?

2g (about half a teaspoon) sprinkled over food or blended into juices and smoothies. Its flavour is strong and distinctly green, so many people prefer it in a smoothie or alongside other greens. Start with a small amount and find what suits you. Blue-Green Algae and our other BioActive greens work well together to give the body the broadest range of nutrients. Try it alongside our Barley Grass and Kamut Wheatgrass juice powders.
