What is Schisandra Berry?

Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis) is the famous five-flavour berry of Traditional Chinese Medicine, wu wei zi, so named because it carries all five of the classical tastes at once: sweet, sour, salty, bitter and pungent. A deep red berry from a climbing forest vine, it has been treasured for centuries as one of the great tonic herbs.

Ours is a concentrated dual extract of the berry, capturing both its water-soluble and its fat-soluble compounds, so the full, layered character of the fruit comes through.

What is a dual extract, and why does it matter?

The most valued compounds in many tonic herbs sit in two different fractions: water-soluble compounds that release into hot water, and fat-soluble compounds that only release into alcohol. A dual extract performs both, then concentrates the result at a 10:1 ratio, capturing the full spectrum of the herb's chemistry in a form the body can readily absorb.

The liquid extract is dried with fine spray technology into a micro-fine powder. As a dual extract it carries both water-soluble and fat-soluble compounds, so it is best stirred into hot water; a little may not fully dissolve, which is normal for a true full spectrum dual extract. Nothing is added, and nothing is standardised away.

Where does our Schisandra Berry come from?

Our schisandra is sourced from China, where the berry grows on forest vines in the cooler northern regions. We verify origin and batch quality directly with our supplier, and every batch is tested before it reaches you.

How do you take Schisandra Berry Extract?

A daily serving is 1g, roughly half a level teaspoon. Stir into hot water, tea, plant milk or a smoothie. There is no brewing or steeping needed, the work has already been done in the extraction.

It sits naturally in a daily tonic-herb practice alongside our Reishi and He Shou Wu. Explore the full range of Tonic Herbs.

Your questions, answered

Is there any alcohol left in the finished extract?

Our dual extraction draws on both water and alcohol, so that the water-soluble and the fat-soluble compounds of the berry are both captured. The alcohol belongs to the making, not to the finished powder. Once both extractions are done, the liquid extract is dried with fine spray technology into a micro-fine powder, and the alcohol is driven off during that drying.

What you receive is a dry, full-spectrum extract powder, with nothing added back in. That is the fine powder in the dark glass jar.

Is your Schisandra standardised to a percentage?

No, and that is a deliberate choice. Many extracts are standardised to a fixed percentage of a single compound, or made at very high ratios. A larger number can look impressive on a label, yet it often means the extract has been narrowed to one fraction of the fruit.

We prefer to keep the full spectrum of the berry's naturally occurring compounds, in the proportions the plant grew them. Ours is a 10:1 dual extract, never standardised, with nothing added and nothing taken away.

Do you test your Schisandra for heavy metals?

Yes. Every batch is tested for purity, including heavy metals, pesticides and other contaminants, before it reaches you. Schisandra is a wild berry drawn from forest soil, so heavy metals are a fair thing to ask about, and it is why we test rather than assume.

What does Schisandra taste like, and can I make it easier to take?

Schisandra is the famous five-flavour berry, wu wei zi, named because it carries all five classical tastes at once: sweet, sour, salty, bitter and pungent. That is unusual in a single food, and it is part of why it has been treasured for so long. As a concentrated extract, the flavour is bold and layered.

Many people enjoy it just as it is. If you would rather soften it, stir your serving into a drink you already enjoy, a smoothie, juice, tea or plant milk, rather than plain water. Warm water blends it more smoothly than cold.

Why has my Schisandra set firm, and how should I store it?

Because our extract contains no humectants or bulking agents, the powder naturally draws in a little moisture from the air and can firm up over time, especially once the jar has been opened. This is normal, and it is still perfectly good to use.

Keep the jar sealed and away from steam and humidity. If it does set firm, break off a piece and crumble it, or a small grinder makes short work of it. It will still dissolve readily in a warm drink, though as a true dual extract a little may not fully dissolve, which is normal.

Can I take Schisandra alongside other tonic herbs?

Yes. Schisandra sits comfortably within a wider daily tonic-herb practice, and many people take it beside others. Customers often pair it with our Reishi, He Shou Wu or Polygala, sometimes in the same warm drink and sometimes at different points of the day.

Many people also like to cycle tonic herbs, for example five days on and two days rest, finding a rhythm that suits their own routine. There is no need to take everything at once. Start with one herb, settle into it, and add others as it suits you. You can explore our full range of tonic herbs whenever you are ready.
