✧ What is Tongkat Ali?
Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia), also known as Longjack, is one of the most prized tonic herbs of Southeast Asia. The name means "Ali's walking stick" in Malay, a nod to the plant's tall, straight growth and its long, deep roots. It grows wild in the rainforests of Indonesia and Malaysia, where it has been valued for generations as a traditional daily tonic, taken by both men and women.
Our Tongkat Ali is wild-harvested from mature roots deep in the Indonesian jungle, then prepared as a full-spectrum dual extract. The root is woody and slow-growing, and the mature roots are the most treasured part of the plant.

✧ Why is our Tongkat Ali a 10:1 dual extract?
We make our Tongkat Ali as a 10:1 dual extract, using both water and alcohol to capture the widest range of the root's naturally occurring compounds. Many extracts are made at much higher ratios, such as 50:1, 100:1 or even 200:1. A bigger number sounds more impressive, but it does not always make a better extract.
Some of the root's natural compounds are delicate, and prolonged heat or heavy concentration can damage them. By keeping to a gentler 10:1 ratio with a temperature-controlled process, we capture the compounds in the same proportions as the whole root, rather than stripping the extract back to a single fraction. That is what "full spectrum" means.
The liquid extract is then gently dried into a micro-fine powder that dissolves easily into warm water or any drink, with no fillers or bulking agents added.
✧ How to take Tongkat Ali?
Start with 0.5g (about a quarter level teaspoon) once a day, in warm water or stirred into your favourite tea, smoothie or drink. This is a potent, concentrated extract, so take it with food and plenty of water. Some build up to 1 to 2g a day, though most find a smaller amount is plenty.
Cycling: many people like to cycle tonic herbs, for example five days on and two days rest. Find a rhythm that suits your routine.
Tongkat Ali sits well alongside other tonic herbs, such as our He Shou Wu or Pine Pollen. Our customer reviews below describe many of the ways people have come to use it.
✧ Is Tongkat Ali safe?
Tongkat Ali has been taken as a daily tonic in Southeast Asia for generations. As with any concentrated herbal extract, take it sensibly: start with a small amount (0.5g or less), take it with food, and do not exceed the suggested serving.
We would not recommend it during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you take any hormone-related or other regular medication, or are under medical care, please speak to a qualified healthcare practitioner before adding Tongkat Ali to your routine.
✧ Your questions, answered
› Is Tongkat Ali the same as Longjack?
Yes. Tongkat Ali and Longjack are two names for the same plant, Eurycoma longifolia. "Tongkat Ali" is the Malay name; "Longjack" is the name it became known by in the West. In Indonesia it is also called Pasak Bumi, and you may see it described as "Malaysian ginseng", though it is not related to true ginseng.
What matters most is the quality of the root and how it is extracted. Ours is wild-harvested mature root, prepared as a full-spectrum 10:1 dual extract.
› Where does our Tongkat Ali come from, and is it just the root?
Our Tongkat Ali is wild-harvested from the mature roots of Eurycoma longifolia, deep in the rainforests of Indonesia. It is the root, and only the root, that we use. The mature root grows slowly and is the most treasured part of the plant, and it is where the tradition has always looked.
You may come across "red tongkat ali" or "black tongkat ali" offered elsewhere. Those names usually belong to different plants altogether. Ours is the genuine Tongkat Ali, Eurycoma longifolia, sometimes called Longjack or Pasak Bumi, wild-harvested rather than farmed.
› Do you test your Tongkat Ali for heavy metals?
Yes. Every batch of our Tongkat Ali is tested for purity, including heavy metals, pesticides and other contaminants, before it reaches you. You can view the current Certificate of Analysis for the details.
Heavy metals are a fair thing to ask about with any root drawn from wild soil, and it is why we test rather than assume. What we do not do is standardise the extract to a fixed percentage of any single compound. We keep the whole root's natural balance intact instead, which is a different approach, explained just below.
› Is your Tongkat Ali standardised to a percentage of eurycomanone?
No, and this is a deliberate choice. Many extracts are standardised to a set percentage of eurycomanone, or made at very high ratios such as 100:1 or 200:1. A larger number can look impressive on a label, yet it often means the extract has been reduced to a single fraction of the root.
We prefer to keep the full spectrum of the root's naturally occurring compounds, in the proportions the plant grew them. Ours is a gentle, temperature-controlled 10:1 dual extract, so the whole character of the root is carried through rather than narrowed to one measured constituent.
As a rough guide to strength, because it is a 10:1 extract, around 0.5g of our powder reflects roughly 5g of the raw root.
› Is there any alcohol left in the finished extract?
Our dual extraction uses both water and alcohol to draw out the widest range of the root's compounds. The alcohol is part of the making, not the finished product. Once both extractions are complete, the liquid extract is gently dried into a micro-fine powder, and the alcohol is driven off during that drying.
What remains is a dry, full-spectrum extract powder, with nothing added back in. That is the fine powder you receive in the jar.
› Why is it bitter, and how do I keep it from clumping?
Tongkat Ali is famously bitter. That bitterness is simply the taste of a real, full-spectrum extract with nothing added to mask it. The easiest way to take it is with food, or stirred into a smoothie, juice or your favourite tea rather than plain water. Warm water helps it dissolve more smoothly than cold, which can leave it clumping.
Because our extracts contain no anti-caking agents or humectants, the powder naturally draws in moisture from the air and can firm up over time, especially once the jar has been opened. This is normal, and it is still perfectly good to use. Keep the jar sealed and away from steam and humidity, and if it does set hard, chip off a piece and break it up. A small grinder makes short work of it, and it will still dissolve readily in a hot drink.
› Can I take Tongkat Ali alongside other tonic herbs?
Yes. Many people enjoy Tongkat Ali as part of a wider daily ritual, and it sits comfortably beside other tonic herbs. Customers often pair it with our Desert Cistanche, He Shou Wu, Pine Pollen or Lion's Mane, sometimes in the same warm drink and sometimes at different points of the day.
There is no need to take everything at once. Start with one herb, find your rhythm, and add others as it suits you. You can explore our full range of tonic herbs whenever you are ready.
