What is Lion's Mane Mushroom?

Lion's mane (Hericium erinaceus) is a striking mushroom that grows in cascading white spines from the wounds of hardwood trees, looking more like a frozen waterfall than a fungus. In Traditional Chinese Medicine and Japanese kampo it has long been valued by Buddhist monks as a food for clarity and steadiness of mind. The fresh mushroom has a tender, almost seafood like texture when cooked, with a delicate flavour. The extract concentrates the active compounds into a fine powder that is taken as a daily tonic.

What is a Dual Extract, and why does it matter?

Lion's mane contains two distinct families of bioactive compounds. The water soluble beta glucans, found in the fruiting body cell walls, release through hot water extraction. The fat soluble compounds, including the hericenones that lion's mane is most studied for, require alcohol extraction. A dual extract performs both processes, capturing the full spectrum of lion's mane chemistry at a 10:1 concentration. The result is a product where the bioactive compounds are concentrated and bioavailable, free from the indigestible chitin that makes raw mushroom powder so poorly absorbed.

Where does our Lion's Mane come from?

Our lion's mane is wild cultivated in the Dabie Mountains of China, where the spores are inoculated onto hardwood logs and allowed to fruit naturally in clean mountain air. Only the fruiting body is used in our extract, never grain grown mycelium. Lion's mane grown on grain substrate contains far less of the active compounds than fruiting body extracts, which is why we are particular about sourcing only true fruiting body material from a producer we have worked with for years.

How do you take Lion's Mane Extract?

A daily serving is one gram, roughly half a level teaspoon. Stir into warm water, plant milk, coffee or a smoothie. Many customers take lion's mane in the morning, often with their first coffee, finding it pairs particularly well with cacao or chai style spices. As a dual extract it is best stirred into hot water; some of the fat-soluble compounds may not fully dissolve, which is normal. It can also be added to soups, stews or porridge for a more savoury preparation. There is no brewing or steeping needed, the extraction has already been performed.

It sits naturally alongside our Reishi, Chaga or Cordyceps in a daily blend. Explore the full range of Medicinal Mushroom extracts.

What does Lion's Mane taste like?

Lion's mane has a mild, faintly nutty, slightly mushroom forward flavour, gentler than reishi or chaga. It is one of the easier mushroom extracts to get used to, with no bitterness. In warm water it produces a pale golden drink. The flavour blends well with both sweet and savoury preparations, which is why lion's mane is often the first mushroom extract our customers reach for when building a daily practice.
