What are baru nuts?

In the vast Cerrado savanna of Brazil, a region of ancient grasslands and scattered trees, the baru tree (Dipteryx alata) produces a hard-shelled fruit that holds something remarkable inside. Baru nuts are the seeds of this fruit, wild harvested by local communities who have gathered them for generations. Rich in protein, zinc, and healthy fats, they carry a warm, toasty flavour somewhere between a peanut and a cashew, with a depth all their own. Our range includes both salted peeled baru nuts and whole roasted baru nuts.

What are the nutritional benefits of baru nuts?

Baru nuts offer an impressive nutritional profile. They are particularly high in protein (around 25%), making them one of the most protein-dense nuts available. They are also a notable source of zinc, iron, magnesium, and dietary fibre. The fats they contain are predominantly monounsaturated, the same heart-friendly type found in olive oil. In the Cerrado region, baru nuts have long been valued as a sustaining food, eaten by those who work the land and need lasting energy from a single handful.

How do baru nuts taste and how are they used?

Baru nuts have a rich, roasted flavour with a satisfying crunch. The salted peeled variety makes a perfect snack on its own or scattered over salads and grain bowls. The whole roasted version, with its skin intact, offers a slightly more robust, earthy character. Some people grind them into baru nut butter. Others fold them into baking. They are versatile, naturally delicious, and entirely free from common allergens like gluten and dairy.

Why are wild harvested baru nuts special?

Wild harvesting means these nuts are gathered from baru trees growing naturally in the Cerrado, not from plantations. This supports both the ecosystem and the communities who depend on the savanna's natural abundance. The Cerrado is one of the most biodiverse regions on earth, and the harvest of baru nuts provides an economic incentive to protect rather than clear the land. When you eat baru nuts, you are participating in that cycle of care. Explore our wider superfoods collection for more nutrient-dense whole foods.
