Whole Roasted Baru Nuts | Wild Harvested
✧ What are Baru Nuts?
Baru nuts are the seeds of the giant Baruzeiro trees, native to the endangered Cerrado savannah in Brazil. They're deliciously crunchy - similar in taste to peanuts, but creamy like almonds. Traditionally enjoyed roasted, with their brown papery skin.
Not technically a nut, they are an ancient legume. They do not bear the allergenic characteristics of some legumes such as peanuts, soybeans and peas. Also unrelated to tree nuts. The misnomer happened when "castanha" was first translated from Portuguese to English as nut!

✧ Where do our Baru Nuts come from?
The Cerrado is a vast tropical savannah in Brazil, but it's disappearing faster than the Amazon rainforest and is vastly unprotected. Home to an extraordinarily biodiverse ecosystem, the Baruzeiro trees are guardian trees - providing shelter, stabilising soil and preventing flooding. Now they are giving local communities a positive economic alternative to logging, charcoal and soy production.
Baruzeiro trees are native to the Cerrado and thrive without chemicals and artificial irrigation. They serve the Cerrado, taking nothing from it.
Collected by hand, local co-ops are working together to preserve their home and uphold cultural traditions. The Baru Nut story is beautiful and full of hope. The trees grow wild across the Cerrado. Instead of continuing to cut the trees down for their high-quality wood, people are now protecting them and replanting.
