✧ What is White Peony Root?
White Peony (Paeonia lactiflora) is one of the most beloved herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine, where the root is known as bai shao. Far more than the ornamental garden flower it is famous for, the peony's root has been used in the classic tonic formulas of the Chinese tradition for well over a thousand years, a gentle, nourishing root prized for its harmonising character.
Ours is offered as a concentrated full spectrum extract, so the whole root is captured in a simple daily powder.
✧ What is a full spectrum extract, and why does it matter?
Our white peony root is extracted with purified water, in line with the traditions of Chinese herbalism, using a gentle, temperature-controlled process matched to the herb's characteristics. This captures the naturally occurring compounds in the same proportions found in the herb itself, which is what makes it a true full spectrum extract rather than an isolated or standardised fraction.
The liquid extract is dried with fine spray technology into a micro-fine powder that dissolves easily into warm water. Nothing is added, and nothing is standardised away.

✧ Where does our White Peony Root come from?
Our white peony is sourced from China, the herb's traditional home, and extracted in the traditional way. We verify origin and batch quality directly with our supplier, and every batch is tested before it reaches you.
✧ How do you take White Peony Root Extract?
A daily serving is 1g, roughly half a level teaspoon. Stir into warm water, tea, plant milk or a smoothie. There is no brewing or steeping needed, the work has already been done in the extraction.

› Is your White Peony standardised to a percentage of paeoniflorin?
No, and this is a deliberate choice. Some peony extracts are standardised to a set percentage of paeoniflorin, the compound most often measured on a label, or made at very high ratios. A larger number can look impressive, yet it usually means the extract has been narrowed to a single fraction of the root.
We prefer to keep the full spectrum of the root's naturally occurring compounds, in the proportions the plant grew them. Ours is a gentle, temperature-controlled 10:1 full spectrum extract, drawn out with purified water in the way of Chinese herbalism, so the whole character of the root is carried through rather than reduced to one measured constituent. As a rough guide to strength, because it is a 10:1 extract, a gram of our powder reflects roughly ten grams of the raw root.
› Is there any alcohol in your White Peony Root Extract?
No. Ours is a water extract, drawn out with purified water alone, in line with the traditions of Chinese herbalism. Some of our other extracts are dual extracts, made with both water and alcohol, but no alcohol is used in making our White Peony.

› Do you test your White Peony for heavy metals, and can I see the Certificate of Analysis?

Heavy metals are a fair thing to ask about with any root drawn from the soil, and it is why we test each batch rather than assume. The same testing details also sit on the ingredients tab above.
› How should I store it, and why has my powder firmed up?
Because our extracts contain no anti-caking agents or humectants, the fine powder naturally draws in moisture from the air and can firm up over time, especially once the jar has been opened. This is normal, and it is still perfectly good to use.
Keep the jar sealed and away from steam and humidity. If it does set hard, chip off a piece and break it up, or let a small grinder make short work of it. It will still dissolve readily in a warm drink.
