Astragalus Root Extract · Full Spectrum · Wild Cultivated
✧ What is Astragalus Root?
Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus) is one of the most treasured herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine, where it is known as huang qi, "the yellow leader". It is one of the fifty fundamental herbs of the Chinese tradition, a classic Qi tonic that has been taken for well over two thousand years, particularly through the colder months of the year.
It is the root of a small leguminous plant native to the grasslands of northern China and Mongolia, harvested from mature plants several years old, when the long, fibrous roots are at their richest. In the traditional view, astragalus is a warming, strengthening root, valued for supporting the body's deep reserves of vital energy.
✧ What is a full spectrum extract, and why does it matter?
Our astragalus is extracted with purified water, in line with the traditions of Chinese herbalism, using a gentle, temperature-controlled process matched to the root's characteristics. This captures the naturally occurring compounds in the same proportions found in the root itself, which is what makes it a true full spectrum extract rather than an isolated or standardised fraction.
The liquid extract is then dried with fine spray technology into a micro-fine 10:1 powder that dissolves easily into warm water. Nothing is added, and nothing is standardised away, so what you take mirrors the balance of the whole root, concentrated tenfold.

✧ Where does our Astragalus come from?
Our astragalus is sourced from northern China, the herb's traditional home, where the climate and soil suit the deep, slow growth of the root. We work directly with our supplier to verify origin and batch quality, and only the mature roots are used, dried and extracted in the traditional way. Every batch is tested before it reaches you.
✧ How do you take Astragalus Extract?
A daily serving is 1g, roughly half a level teaspoon. Stir into warm water, tea, plant milk or a smoothie, or add it to soups and broths, the traditional way astragalus has long been taken in China. There is no brewing or steeping needed, the work has already been done in the extraction.
Astragalus sits naturally in a daily tonic-herb practice alongside our Reishi and He Shou Wu. Explore the full range of Tonic Herbs.
✧ Your questions, answered
› What does the 10:1 mean, and how much root is in a serving?
Our astragalus is a 10:1 extract, which means ten parts of the raw root are concentrated into one part of finished powder. In practice, around 1g of our powder reflects roughly 10g of the raw root, gathered into a micro-fine powder rather than a bulky scoop of ground root.
This is why the serving looks small next to the raw root amounts you may see quoted elsewhere. A daily serving is 1g, roughly half a level teaspoon, already concentrated tenfold. Because it is a full spectrum extract, that 1g carries the naturally occurring compounds of the whole root in the same proportions the plant grew them, rather than a single isolated fraction.
› Do you test your Astragalus for heavy metals, and can I see the Certificate of Analysis?
Yes. Every batch of our astragalus is tested for purity, including heavy metals, pesticides and other contaminants, before it reaches you. Astragalus is a root drawn from the soil, so heavy metals are a fair thing to ask about, and it is why we test each batch rather than assume.
You can view the current Certificate of Analysis for the details, and it is also linked on the ingredients tab above. If you would like more on where the root comes from, our sourcing policy explains how we verify origin and quality.
› How should I store it, and why might it clump?
Keep the jar sealed, somewhere cool and dry, and away from steam and humidity. It comes in dark glass to protect the extract, so the jar it arrives in is the ideal home for it.
Because our astragalus contains no anti-caking agents or humectants, the micro-fine powder can draw in moisture from the air and firm up over time, especially once the jar has been opened. This is completely normal and the powder is still perfectly good to use. If it sets, break off a piece and stir it into warm water, where it dissolves readily.
› Can I take Astragalus alongside other tonic herbs?
Yes. Many people take our astragalus as part of a wider daily tonic-herb ritual, and it sits comfortably beside other roots and mushrooms. Customers often keep it alongside our Reishi, He Shou Wu, Schisandra or Panax Ginseng, sometimes in the same warm drink and sometimes at different points of the day.
There is no need to take everything at once. Start with one herb, find your rhythm, and add others as it suits you. You can explore our full range of tonic herbs whenever you are ready.
