Organic 'Shahtoot' Black Mulberries
Known as the “King's" or "Superior" mulberry. Our black ‘Shahtoot’ mulberries are exquisite! Soft, sticky and satisfyingly fruity
✧ What makes shahtoot mulberries different?
These gorgeous mulberries are from the rarer ‘Morus nigra’ species of mulberry tree. Most mulberry fruits (even black mulberries) are from Morus alba trees. Morus nigra mulberries are superior to the common mulberry, with an abundance of anti-oxidants and phenolic compounds
Shahtoot means king mulberry. Across Uzbekistan, Iran and Central Asia that name is kept for the dark, soft-fruited trees rather than the common pale sort, and it is the one the growers themselves reach for
Our special mulberries have a delightful fruity tartness. They are sticky, almost juicy, unlike the hard dry mulberries typically available. They are hand-picked to ensure the soft berries are not crushed and sun-dried
Most dried mulberries you will meet are firm and a little fibrous. These stay soft and chewy, closer to a fresh berry that has been allowed to dry slowly in the sun than to anything from a packet
In the Chinese tonic tradition, mulberries have long been treasured as an anti-ageing yin tonic, taken to nourish the blood and kidneys
According to a study published in the “Journal of Medicinal Food,” mulberry is an excellent source of C3G. These beautiful deep-coloured fruits are rich in phenolic compounds - phenolic acids and flavonols are regarded as major functional food components and are understood to have an antioxidant effect on the body
