What is chaga mushroom?

Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is a slow growing fungus that gathers on the trunks of birch trees in the cold forests of the Northern Hemisphere. It is dark, almost black on the outside, with a deep amber heart. The indigenous peoples of Siberia, Korea, Mongolia and Northern Europe have steeped chaga as a tea for generations, and in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Russian folk herbalism it has long been valued for its grounding, restorative qualities. Chaga is sometimes called the king of medicinal mushrooms, though it is technically a sterile conk rather than a true mushroom.

Where does our chaga come from?

Our chaga is wild harvested from cold birch forests in the mountains of China, gathered in winter when the antioxidant compounds are at their richest. Only the woody, mature growths are taken, leaving the rest of the conk to continue its slow life on the host tree. This is the traditional way of gathering chaga, with care for the forest and the next harvest. We work directly with our supplier to verify origin, harvest method and batch quality, and a Certificate of Analysis is available on request for every batch we receive.

What is a dual extract and why does it matter?

Chaga's most valuable compounds sit in two different places within the conk. Water soluble polysaccharides, including the well studied beta glucans, release into hot water. Fat soluble compounds, including the triterpenes and chaga's signature dark phenolic compounds, only release into alcohol. A simple ground powder offers neither in meaningful concentration, because the chitin walls of the mushroom are too tough for the body to break down. A dual extract performs both extractions and concentrates the result at a 10:1 ratio, in a form your body can actually absorb.

How do I take chaga extract?

A daily serving is one gram, roughly half a level teaspoon. Stir into warm water, plant milk or your morning coffee, or add it to a smoothie or elixir blend. Many customers enjoy chaga as a daily foundation, often paired with reishi, lion's mane or cordyceps. The extract dissolves easily in liquid above room temperature and can also be sprinkled into hot foods or salad. There is no brewing or steeping needed, the work has already been done in the extraction. Begin with one daily serving and adjust as you learn how your body responds.

What does chaga taste like?

Chaga has a soft, earthy flavour with a hint of vanilla and a warmth that lingers, closer to a mild forest tea than to coffee. In warm water it produces a deep amber drink with a gentle, lightly bitter finish. Many customers find chaga blends beautifully with cacao, cinnamon or a touch of honey, and it pairs naturally with reishi and other tonic herbs. It is unsweetened, single ingredient, with no flavourings added.
