Premium Bee Bread (Ambrosia / Perga)
✧ What is Bee Bread (Perga)?
Bee bread, also called Perga or Ambrosia, is the only fermented food made inside the hive. Worker bees gather flower pollen, pack it into the comb with nectar and their own natural enzymes, and seal each cell beneath a layer of honey and wax. There, slowly and without oxygen, it ferments into a living food the bees rely on, sweet yet tangy, with a soft, dissolving texture.
It is quite different from bee pollen. Raw pollen grains are wrapped in tough outer walls that are hard for us to break down; fermentation in the comb softens those walls and unlocks what is held inside, which is why the bees go to such trouble to make it. The old name says it plainly: Ambrosia, the food of the gods.
Our Premium Bee Bread is pure Perga, produced entirely by bees and sourced directly from a single family of beekeepers. To understand how it is made and how it differs from bee pollen, read our full guide: What Is Bee Bread? The Fermented Treasure of the Hive.
✧ Where does our Bee Bread come from?
Bee bread is the bees' own primary food, essential to the health of the colony, so how much is taken from a hive matters enormously. Some beekeepers chase quick, cheap harvests and take more than the bees can stand to lose; the colony suffers and the harvests that follow are poorer. We do not work that way.
We source our bee bread directly from a family of beekeepers in Latvia whose tradition of working with bees stretches back more than 150 years. For them, beekeeping is an art and a livelihood, and the wellbeing of the bees comes first; only what can be spared is ever gathered. We are honoured to work with them, sourced directly to ensure full traceability and a genuinely responsible harvest.

✧ How do you eat and store Bee Bread?
Bee bread can be eaten straight from the spoon or added to any raw recipe. It is sweet yet tangy, with a pleasant twang.
- Stir it through yoghurt, or sprinkle over porridge and desserts
- Blend it into smoothies
- Add it to trail mixes alongside nuts and raisins
- When you can, let the little nuggets dissolve slowly in the mouth
How much: Perga is very nutritionally dense, so we suggest starting with 1 teaspoon a day, and only a little at first. You can increase to a dessertspoonful as suits you.
How to store it: As a fermented food, keep bee bread out of the light, somewhere dry and cool. If you move it from the pouch to a jar, keep the jar in a dark cupboard.
Please note: Bee bread contains pollen, so avoid it if you are allergic to pollen or bee products. Not suitable for children under 2. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication, speak to a qualified healthcare practitioner first.
